The Moloka'i Catholic Community

Four churches comprise the Moloka'i Catholic Community.

St. Vincent Ferrer of Maunaloa Town (west)

St. Sophia's Church in Kaunakakai (central)

St. Joseph Church in Kamalo (east)

Our Lady of Seven Sorrows Church at Kalua'aha(east)

Father Damien built two of these churches, St. Joseph and Our Lady of Seven Sorrows, in his mission to serve the "topside" faithful of Moloka'i. We are honored and blessed to serve as the stewards of these Damien Churches.

Over its 150 year history, the Moloka'i topside Catholic Community has been well served by the Sacred Heart priets, the original Catholic missionaries to the Hawaiian Islands and the diocesan priests of Hawaii. In 2007, after a 30-year absense, the Sacret Hearts priests returned to minister to the Catholic community on topside Moloka'i. We welcome the return of the Sacred Hearts Order to Moloka'i, and join in their prayer that our patron, Blessed Damien, will soon be added to the canon of saints.

The Moloka'i Catholic Community is a community native Hawaiians, Americans, Pacific Islanders and Asians, many of whom came here to work in the sugar and pineapple plantations. For most of us there is no other place that we would choose to live and die. The Molokai Catholic Community lives as ohana (family), serving God, serving each other and the great world community.
