Molokai History:

(from “Pioneers of the Faith: History of the Catholic Mission in Hawaii (1827-1940)” by Robert Schoofs, SS.CC., Sturgis Printing Company, Inc., Honolulu, HI, 1978)

(continued from May 24th)

Maunaloa was the first community in the Hoolehua District to have its own school and its own church. The church of St. Vincent Ferrer, favorite saint of the Filipinos, was built on the outskirts of the compact village in easy reach of all, and was blessed and dedicated by Bishop ALencastre on March 3, 1940.

Ecclesiastically, Molokai had finally come into its own, forming an integral, well-organized and self-sustaining part of the Honolulu Catholic Mission.

Here follows the list of pastors of Sacred Heart Church, Hoolehua: Fathers Henry Boeynaems, 1929-1932; Philibert Vanfranchem, 1932-1934; John-Mary Systermans, 1934.

(continued tomorrow with a new bit of history)

Blessings, pono and pule!
