Social Ministry

Included under Social Ministry are those ministries that arise out of taking action to fulfill the mission of our faith as laid out by the Church Leadership. These areas include various needs in our community, and in times of our lives when the need is for ourselves or our brothers and sisters in Christ. Our outreach remains rooted in Scripture and Catholic teaching.

The areas of social ministry are: bereavement, St. Peregine-Cancer Prayer Group, Hui Kako’o, Food Pantry, St. Damien Hospitality, Social Ministry Team, Social Justice.

Bereavement

The ministry serves to reach out to those who have had a loss (of good health, job, home, death, culture, etc.) with emotional support; to share knowledge of the normal emotions of grief. A support group is provided, if needed, as are reading materials on how to cope with grief in a healthy way. Letters are sent to anyone in the Molokai Community who are ill or have experienced a death in their family, which shares that we care and are praying for them. The letter is signed by the priest on behalf of the St. Damien Catholic Parish Community.

Social Ministry Team

Assists the homebound, feeding the less fortunate, school and community projects, helping to address good communication that keeps the whole parish community connected; creating formation opportunities to ensure that social ministry work remains rooted in Scripture and Catholic Social Teaching.

Social Justice

In conjunction with the social teaching of the Church, our Social Justice ministry reflects on Church documents to assist families with situation of injustice that has been done; being aware of the real need in today’s society, to help others who cannot speak out for themselves and to give them the support and encouragement needed to bring dignity and justice to their lives.

St Peregrine–Cancer Prayer Group

St. Peregrine is the patron saint of cancer patients. All parishioners who have cancer or are in remission are invited to be a support to one another. This is a Catholic based prayer group, sharing experiences and being hope for others with this disease.

Food Pantry

Provides food to persons in need. Those who work in this ministry conducts interviews with clients in a prayerful manner; receive, shelve and distribute food to those in need.

Hui e Kamiano ame Meleana / St. Damien Hospitality

Plans fellowship with visiting groups of pilgrims to the island.

Hui Kako’o

The mission is to support families by assisting them to learn how to empower themselves in times of need. This is done by: a) working with them to access resources in our parish and community, b) always moving them in the direction of self-sufficiency, and ultimately, c) arriving at a place in their lives when they can, in turn, be a support and kokua (help) to others.
