Molokai History:
[from Hawaii Catholic Herald, March 16, 1990]
As the plantations [on Molokai] phased out their Molokai operations and families moved away, the membership of St. Theresa Church decreased and staffing presented problems. Finally, in February of 1990, the parishioners, after much deliberation and prayer, agreed to close St. Theresa. They would join the rest of Molokai’s Catholics in Masses at St. Sophia in Kaunakakai, Our Lady of Seven Sorrows in Kaluaaha, and St. Vincent in Maunaloa, a geographic distribution calculated to meet the needs of all the Catholic community served by one priest.
Following the last liturgy there was held a supper social with food cooked by the parishioners and a program described as being “rich in memories” of the many occasions, happy and sad, held in St. Theresa Church. Present and past parishioners were invited to “remember when…”
