Molokai History:
[from “Place Names of Hawaii”, Revised Edition, Pukui, Elbert & Mookini, University of Hawaii Press, Honolulu, 1976]
Haloku: Falls, northeast Molokai, meaning: to ripple
Hamu-wai: Cliff separating Wai-lau and Pu-ko’o valleys, East Molokai, meaning: gulp water
Hanalilolilo: Hill and trail in the forest area above Wai-kolu, Molokai, meaning: disappearing place (it is said that as one approaches this hill, either walking or in a car, it seems always to be receding – perhaps an optical illusion).
Hano: Point, East Molokai, meaning: wheezing
Hau-akea: “Pali” and peak, west Molokai
Blessings, pono and pule!
