A Personal Reflection by Fr. Brian:

It was October of 1989 and I was in my 2nd year of seminary at our House of Studies in Berkeley, CA. We were just sitting down in the living room of one of our two houses to say evening prayer and then watch the first game of the world series between the San Francisco Giants & Oakland Athletics. I’ll never forget! It was exactly 5:04pm when the house began to shake.

It rocked slowly at first, then got stronger and stronger! We looked at each other, not knowing what to do. Our Superior was laid up in his chair with a cast on his foot. Some got up and ran out the front door while I stayed behind because if the house were to start falling down, I would help our Superior who couldn’t walk out on his own.

You could hear the trees shaking violently as the quake lasted for what seemed like several minutes.

(to be continued tomorrow)

Blessings, pono and pule!
